MacCarthy'sMacCarthy's Pub is one of those pleasant and
warm pubs that you stumble on, arrive on recommendation, or simply refer to as
your "local". It is located on Goat St., in Dingle Town, Co.
Kerry.
The Pub has been in the MacCarthy family since the early
1800's. It has been passed down from generation to generation, and is now in
hands of Tom & Pauline MacCarthy.
Through the years
MacCarthy's Pub operated in the old style of Irish Pubs. Back then, most Irish
Pubs offered two services under the one roof. With two bar counters in most
pubs, the owners traded in drink at one, and in chandleries, hardware shops,
butchers and grocers at the other. In that time, you do all your shopping in
Irish Pubs. In MacCarthy's Bar, the family ran a grocers from our second
counter, where everything from tomatoes to tea, and soap to snuff was for sale.
An old Snuff Cutter still hangs behind the Bar, just in case!
In the middle of the
last century, Dannie MacCarthy, built and operated a bakery, providing fresh
loaves to the town. Until the 1980's, the long sheds that stood previously to
the back of the pub provided stabling for the Dingle Races. The horses would
come from all over Ireland and Britain to compete at this great flapper meet
that is still held on the second weekend in August.
MacCarthy's Pub has
remained popular as a social establishment since it's opening, and has
maintained it's two centuries of charm. The pub interior has changed throughout
the years as some of our pictures show, while on the outside only the colours
have changed. |
